Mesquite is a city in Clark County, Nevada, United States. The population was 523 at the 2010 census. The Mesquite area covers an area of 23 square miles (60 km2). It lies on the eastern edge of Clark County and is bordered by the town of Nye to the north,Las Vegas to the east, Arizonan ghost town Springerville to the south, and Douglas County to the west. The first European settler in what is now Mesquite was Henry Nashoba in 1847. Nashoba's grandson, John Wesley Nashoba, began trading with Native Americans here in 1859. In 1860 he founded what became known as Nashoba Ranch which ran from Mesa de Chelly southwest through Mesquite then north into Douglas County. In 1865 his son-in-law James Waddell purchased some land south of Mesquite from Pahrump Paiutes for $10 per acre (0.40 per sq mi). Waddell called his new mesa "Waddell Mesa". In 1876 Jesse Unthank established a cattle ranch near present-day Chandler along what would become Interstate 880; Unthank named it Mesquite after his home state of New Mexico where he had been born in 1836. The grazing operation grew rapidly due to new irrigation techniques developed by George Weiser during that period; water was brought into valley from springs on nearby mountains under one mile wide channels that fed various canals owned by ranchers such as George Hinkle and Thomas Sitton. By 1888 350 hogs were being raised here daily yielding 400 bushels of corn each..By 1912 there were 10 businesses with over 1,000 employees employing people in cotton production and other agricultural activities including lumbering and mining operations; Texas Western Railway built a line through this area connecting Las Vegas with Salt Lake City via Needles in 1908 but abandoned it because it offered no competition for local transportation services..In 1915 both Unthank's ranch east of Mesquite and Weiser's canalized water system became part of another great development occurring throughout southern Nevada when William Durant donated 640 acres (248 ha) near Reno to provide a more northerly route for Ulysses S Grant's newly created Indian General Headquarters..The road soon became Curry Highway when it was opened to traffic on November 29th 1920 . This event marked also much later when President Harry Truman visiting NV mentioned "McNeely" while discussing Operation Neptune's Spear during his 1945 Stateofthe Union Address . Today many residents commute into Las Vegas or Reno using I-880 or I-15

Mesquite, Nevada is an unincorporated community in Clark County, Nevada, United States. It is located on the east side of the Las Vegas Strip and is part of the metropolitan area that includes Las Vegas and Reno. The population was 6,717 at the 2010 census.[1] The small town began as a cattle ranch in 1875. A grain elevator was built there in 1902. Mesquite's post office opened in 1907. The name "Mesquite" was given to it by Major John Waddell who discovered coal here while exploring nearby Goldfield County in 1859. Waddell named two branches of the McFadden River after his brothers-in-law: James and David McFadden, who had homesteaded near present day Mesquite Creek. In 1911, JB WeldCo., one of Nevada's first oil companies, began production at what is now the White Sands Missile Range south of Mesquite. weldco later merged with American Petroleum Company to become Texaco (now Chevron). The company established a refinery here which produced fuel for military planes during World War II before moving it to El Paso, Texas.[2] In 1951,[3] mesquite became home to one of only two USAF Academy campuses when Air Force Base Pearce opened on adjacent property just north of town. mesquite AFB closed its doors in 1996 due to budget cuts but reopened as Hope AF base[4][5][6][7]. With over 1 million square feet (1008 m2) dedicated to housing units[8], Hope AFB has been seen as a model for new USAF installations around the country since its opening. Hope AFB closed again on 15 September 2009 after sustaining structural damage from an 8 July 2008 earthquake that struck southern California Today much of what once made upmesquite has been replaced by casinos - such as Wynn Resorts' world headquarters - while other parts are used more modestly forresidential and commercial purposes including some small businesses which have sprung up around the former airbase areas like aviation maintenance hangar #1A[9]; formerly known as "Hangar 3".[10],[11],[12],[13],[14],[15]

However, recent economic development has revived the city and its economy is now based mostly on services.
