The first store in downtown Mesquite was opened by Jens Jensen in 1871. Over time, different companies bought rights to use various ranges within mesquite for their own gun sales and target shooting events. This led to a continuous arms race between manufacturers as each company tried to dominate the market with their latest models of guns and ammunition. In 1851, George Armstrong Custer camped near what is now downtown Mesquite while scout team No. 5 Cavalry Regimententure traveled down White River for supplies toward Fort Hall which had been created to keep Arizonans out of Utah Territory then newly acquired from Mexicoland via Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo following Mexican independence from Spain. On July 6th 1876, while camping near what is now Talking Stick Resort Casino just south of Interstate 10 on Red Rock Road northwest of town center along US 95W ranch land owned by William Boyd Johnston cowboy doctor with some 25 head cattle grazing thereabouts when notices were sent through wire telegraph wires about Indians upriver raiding wagon trains at Peoria Mill where over $1 million worth goods had been taken including six gold coins valued at $30 each plus three pistols and four revolvers among other equipment including fourteen cannons) troops opened gunfire resulting in twenty five fatalities two officers Lieutenant Andrew Waddell commanding troop 4 followed by Sergeant First Class John Buren commanding troop 3 killed Lt Waddell Trooper 1 Second Class Hiram Deane killed Waddell 2 Privates Augustus Kelley killed Deane 3 Private John Chivington died instantly trooper 2 Corporal Lorenzo Youngblood also lost his life due to wounds received when outpost failed to offer resistance against Sioux raiding party northwest of town Center area
