Mesquite, Nevada is a town in Las Vegas County, Nevada, United States. The population was 27,912 as of the 2010 census. Mesquite is located on the eastern edge of Las Vegas and has a full-time school system for students in pre-K to 12th grades. It became an incorporated town in 1907 and grew rapidly due to its location near both Reno and Lake Tahoe. In 1990, Mesquite repealed its incorporation status and became an unincorporated community again. Mesquite's economy depends largely on tourism which generates most of the revenue that supports the local government. Manufacturing also plays a role in the town's economy; such businesses as welding supplies, chrome products and agricultural equipment are located there. The first European settler in what is now Mesquite was José stackedriver who arrived about 1847 from Pueblo de las Animas (now Albuquerque). He named his new land Rancho Santiago del Rio Salado y Bighorn because it lay between two ranges of mountains - Range 9 and 10 to the north and south respectively. The name was anglicized to "Mesa Verde" or Green Mesa after surveys by Mormon pioneers in 1849 proved that this area indeed had deposits of coal ashstone similar to those at Coal Canyon east of Mesa Verde Racetrack near Glenwood Springs, Colorado (see Range Survey #2). A post office called Mesa Verde was established at this site on October 15, 1851 by John Wesley Powell with Wm Henshaw as Postmaster. George Gallup served as First Postmaster until 1865 when Hiram Clarke took over operation from him (Galloway History Museum pamphlet: "George Gallup - American Pioneer Post Office Clerk" p 94). On March 1st 1870 Charles Goodyear opened his Rubber works at 6th & S Main Street which he continued until his death in 1902(Goodyear History Museum pamphlet: "Charles Goodyear - Founder Of The Goodyear Tire And Rubber Company" p 96). From here mesaverde got its present name- MESA VERDE INC . In 1892 Gilbert Custer organized a group seeking mineral rights along Red River Valley Railroad but encountered strong resistance from many Native Americans living around the valley including Chief Joseph who threatened violence if any claim were made without their consent(Custer History Museum pamphlet: "Gilbert Custer - Soldier Who Fought For Indians" p 3 ). Consequently Brigham Young ordered all Indian groups throughout Utah to disarm so that not even chiefs could challenge white settlement efforts(Brigham Young Letter history museum link ). However some aboriginal leaders did arm themselves against white intruders- chief Washakie led a band of warriors known as The Mountain Meadows Massacre where 21 people were killed by Cliven Bundy’s father Paul during an attempt to take over cattle grazing rights adjacent to White Sands National Monument.(Washakie Tribal Trustees website ) Although no charges were ever filed against anyone involved with this incident it remains one of America’s most notorious frontier incidents resulting in international condemnation.(Wikipedia article)
