Mesquite is a small town in Clark County, Nevada, United States. The population was 7,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reno–Sparks metropolitan area. Mesquite is east of Las Vegas and west of Henderson. The first permanent settlers in what would become Mesquite were miners who worked the nearby minerals and gold fields in the 1864-1868 Gold Rush. They named their new village after mesa, which means "mountain" in Spanish. A post office was established at Mesquite on December 11, 1868, and remained open until it was discontinued on February 14, 1901. Mesquite's importance as a mining community increased during World War II when many local residents helped contribute to the production of munitions and other war materials. The Post Office reopened on October 15, 1945 following World War II with an expanded services area that included all of Clark County as well as parts of Washoe and Douglas counties to the south. AfterWorld War II ended, Mesquite continued its growth as a center for commerce and culture with several industries emerging such as trucking, banking and education among others. In recent years however there has been an increase in development around Interstate 80 which has led to traffic problems within the town limits; however this does not seem to be affecting overall economic growth or happiness levels within Mesquite Village though some have voiced concerns about how current development plans may impact water resources used by local farmers while causing negative air quality effects from industrial activities taking place close by
