Mesquite is a city in Pershing County, Nevada, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reno–Sparks metropolitan area. The site where Mesquite now stands was first inhabited by the Paiute people in 1853. For many years it was a small ranching community, but development around Mesquite began to take hold in the early 20th century as cotton farming and sheep Herding became more important in Nevada's economy. A large cotton gin complex was built here in 1907 and remains an important part of Mesquite's history and economy today. In 1959, 163 acres (63 ha) of what is now downtown Mesquite were donated to the city by Jerald Lyle Mahoney, Sr., one of its founders. Mahoney also founded Reno-Sparks Airport there in 1957 andserved as its first mayor from 1961 until his death in 1978. TheMahoney School District No. 1 operates Mesquite Elementary School which opened on October 6, 1954; mesquite Middle School which opened on November 15, 1955; and mesquite High School which opened on September 30, 1958. In 1956 mesquite had a population of 710 students and employed 44 teachers; by 2010 that number had increased to over 5,000 employees with an enrollment of over 650 students across six elementary schools (grades 9 through 12), three middle schools (grades 11 through 12), two high schools (grades 11 through 12), four adult education programs ( Adult Education Academy & GED classes only), eleven public parks district land titles including eighteen municipally owned parklands within the city limits - all managed by City Services District #1 - as well as thirteen private lots within city limits having a total surface area exceeding . "Mesquite: A Place for All" It has been said that "the future belongs to those who believe in their dreams." This quote aptly describes what has happened to Mesquite since its establishment more than 100 years ago –despite some rough times –and especially during the past decade when new opportunities have arisen for this rapidly growing community center located just east of Reno-Sparks Airport

Austin, who had made it the capital of New Mexico Territory. The city experienced significant population growth during World War II as many Las Vegas residents relocated to California to fight in the war. After the war, Mesquite experienced rapid decline because of its reliance on silver mining and other economic activities. However, since 2000, there has been a renewed interest in revitalizing Mesquite as a tourist destination due to its unique history and culture.
Mesquite was founded in 1845 by Captain James W. Cooke and his wife, Lydia. Mesquite was the first town in Nevada County. It became an incorporated city in 1907. The population of Mesquite peaked at over 100,000 in 1920, but has declined since then.
