Mesquite is a small town in the Nevada desert. The population was 2,451 at the 2000 census. Mesquite is located on the eastern edge of Clark County and is bordered by Las Vegas to the north, Douglas County to the east, and Carson City to the south. Mesquite derives its name from Spanish explorer José de la Torre's observation that "the mesquite tree grows like an oak" in this area. The town was founded by pioneers in 1876 as a Mormon settlement called Cache Valley. In 1912, Mesquite became part of Washoe County when it was organized from parts of Douglas and Clark Counties. The townsite hereabouts had been known for extracting coal for local use since at least 1851 when pioneer James Sibley discovered coal seams near present-day Mesa Verde National Park. However, it wasn't until 1865 that Mormons began moving into what would become Mesquite because they thought it would be a better place to settle than Salt Lake City due to its remoteness from other communities and lack of restrictions on religious affiliation. Coal mining resumed around 1920 after World War I when water supplies were improved following construction of Hoover Dam nearby. In 1933, mesquite's post office opened under license from Reno Post Office #2, which had been established two years earlier near Moapa River mouth on Carson River about 8 miles (13 km) upstream from where Mesquite now stands. The first postmaster here was George Aiken who served during Richardson's administration as deputy postmaster general; he later became regional director for western division of United States Postal Service before retiring in 1969. Mesquite incorporation took place on December 5, 1912; however, no physical buildings were erected until 1914 when two adobe buildings were built at 4100 North Highway #15 across from current day First Baptist Church (now Wells Fargo Bank). At first there were only men employed in farming or herd cattle; however soon women joined these jobs as well with manysmithing becoming an important aspect of local industry early on Due largely to women’s participation opportunities within LDS church social services programs during those days such as food pantries and domestic servant workhouses operated by missionaries assigned to serve in various parts of America including Mesquite during their stay(s) while performing their missionary duties。
