Henderson was born on October 17, 1855 in Edinburghshire, Scotland to Scottish immigrants John Henderson (1817-1892) and Isabella Macdonald (1827-1901). The family moved to America when John C. were only six years old; he would eventually become one of the largest landowners in Nevada. In 1882 John C. married Clara Bates Hutton (1859-1946), whom he would married until her death in 1942. They would have four children: Clarence Gifford Hutton (1920-1991), Clarissa Ann Hutton (1925-2005), Dorothy Jane Hutton Slaughter (1928-2008), and John Clayton Hutton IV (born 1932). Henderson attended public schools before attending college at Brigham Young University where he earned his Bachelors degree in 1885us cadet style magna cum laude with first class honors from then known as “the best university west of Harvard” according to contemporary sources1 He then returned home to start his own business cycle as a bookkeeper with his brother Clark’s successful mercantile firm2 This success allowed him time to focus on building up his real estate holdings which soon became some of the most valuable properties in Reno County3 In 1893 he moved permanently to Reno where he set up shop at 5th & Henry Streets4 From here he began developing what is now known as downtown Reno into what it is today5 His buildings – including The Mark Twain Hotel6 – continue to be iconic symbols of Reno culture today7 As commercial interests developed throughout downtown Reno during this period8 continued redevelopment projects were undertaken such as The Renaissance Tower9and later additions such as One Knoll11 which helped create a new typeof skyline that continues to define downtown Reno today12 Additionally , through initiatives like creating parkland adjacent thereto13and various other initiatives14Drinkers who patronized local bars or restaurants generally enjoyed views looking out over Washoe Valley15 These days you can find many different businesses open late within easy reach16 And although there are occasional issuesrelated principally with noise levels17 overall I believe that despite some challengesthe vibrancy present day within NV’s oldest city is something that should not be underestimated
