Morgan became interested in the land that he had purchased from the Paiute people for $1 million dollars. By 1912, Henderson had a post office and two schools – one public and one private – as well as a sawmill and an agricultural center with several stores, churches, hotels and other buildings. In 1942, during World War II, Henderson was selected by President Franklin D Roosevelt as an experimental location for the atomic bomb testing program known as Operation Crossroads. After months of selection by military experts only six communities would be chosen for this experimental phase of the war effort: Barstow-Reno-Las Vegas-White Sands-Jefferson City-Henderson For decades after World War II ended there was little development taking place in Henderson because it was considered part of Clark County which functioned more like a Rural District than a metropolitan area like Los Angeles or New York City did at that time
On July 1, 1912, Henderson became a town in the Las Vegas Valley. It was located along the Southern Pacific Railroad between Elko and Reno. On January 16, 1915, Henderson incorporation was granted by the Nevada Territory Legislature. Henderson had a population of about 350 people at its incorporation. The first post office opened on February 14, 1915. The first store in Henderson was built by Wm Clements and Bros., a general store that closed in 1916. In 1918, the United States Post Office moved from Carson City to Henderson after it wasdamaged in an earthquake. On May 10, 1920, the Nevada Highway Department added Mule Pass Road to its route east of Reno as part of their efforts to improve traffic conditions in the area. The first school building in Henderson was built on what is now Fourth Street near South First Avenue. The building served as a school until 1942 when it became a movie theater. In 1945-1946, it served as headquarters for Clark County Sheriff's Department during World War II while also being used as an air raid shelter during that time period
