Henderson, Nevada is a city in Clark County, Nevada, United States. The population was 27,607 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clark County and home to the University of Nevada, Reno. The larger town of Henderson proper had a population of 30,521 at the 2000 census. The first European to explore what is now Henderson was Francisco Vásquez de Coronado on his journey from Tucson to Santa Fe in 1539 CE. In 1847, Mormon pioneers led by Brigham Young set out from Winter Quarters on the Great Salt Lake into what is today Clark County after making successful explorations through Oregon and California. They named their new settlement Fort Bridger (the name may have been inspired by Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto's 1609 claim to land between Arizona and New Mexico). On July 14, 1852 Pahrump author John Gifford wrote "A Journey in Search of Gold" while staying with Captain James Cooksey near present-day Las Vegas for a geological survey for White Sands Mining Company; Gifford became an American citizen that day. A group including William Troup traveled overland from Virginia City via Carson City on September 10th1851 and camped near present-day Henderson where they built a hacienda called Rancho Rinconada which served as headquarters for Mexican forces during the Tonkin Gulf War (1942–1945). On May 9th 1860 Jerome Daly met Hiram Maxim at North Springs Summit about 25 miles east of Henderson when both were visiting Native American settlements in this area known then as “The Spring Valley” about 12 miles south northwest of present day Henderson along State Route 6W just north of Hoover Dam Road/US 95A northeast corner about 8 miles east southeast from current US 95A exit off I-15E/SR 5W. At approximately 1 mile long it spanned 3/4 mile wide with an average depth of 20 feet below surface water or 2 statute feet above mean high water line located at approximately latitude 33 degrees north longitude 121 degrees east .
