The Henderson, Nevada area now includes portions of Carson City and Virginia City. The area was first settled by the Paiute Indians in the late 17th century. By 1851, a company known as the Northern Pacific Railway had built a line from Sacramento through what is now Reno to these two towns. In 1859, Congress created the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to improve water supplies in central Nevada and began leasing land from the Paiutes for this purpose. The Corps developed a canals system that delivered water from salt lakes and reservoirs near Yucca Valley east to Carson City and then south through North Las Vegas to points beyond. This system became known as the Hoover Dam Project. In 1912, Henderson became an incorporated town under California law following passage of State Constitution No. 5 (now Chapter 9) which granted citizenship to all Nevadans who were born or naturalized in Nevada since April 14, 1911 (the date of statehood). Henderson’s incorporation made it one of fourteen towns in Clark County that were not part of any county within which theyilities lay; this practice continued until 1914 when all but one (North Las Vegas) were added to Clark County because their population warranted it. Henderson experienced some growth during World War II due to its proximity to B-29 Superfortresses flying strategic bombing missions over Japan; however, most growth came after World War II as people moved into town for jobs at Hughes Aircraft Company Specialty Products Corporation’s Willow Run plant or other manufacturers located thereabouts during those years. Henderson has experienced economic decline in recent decades due primarily to its proximity toLas Vegas Strip casinos and other entertainment venues; however, recent efforts by city officials have led to some resurgence both inside and outside the city limits since Mayor Donny Lamb set out goals for redevelopment in 2013 including bringing new housing developments closerousing residents on both sides of Interstate 15 instead of just within downtown boundaries while also increasing public transportation options within and outside the city limits as well as developing new business opportunities along I-15 between downtowns like McCarran International Airport northward towards Sparks and southward towards Henderson Center Mall together with expanding Sunoco gas stations northeastward past Springdale Junction into downtown Reno while also developing community pavilions adjacent thereto such as Nature's Place Park located adjacent thereto adjacent thereto adjacent thereto adjacent thereto
Henderson was founded in 1859 by Captain Richard Henderson, a woolen and cotton trader. The town grew rapidly after the discovery of gold in Northern Nevada in 1858. In 1862, Henderson became the capital of what is now Nevada.
