Fernley, Nevada is a town in Placer County, California. The population was 1,512 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sacramento–San Joaquin Valley metropolitan area. Fernley was founded by John Fernley in 1868 as a small winter station on the Truckee River. He named it after his father-in-law, General James Hance. In 1870, Fernley built a frame store and post office here. The first school in Fernley was taught by Mrs. Anna Jourdain and boy students from nearby Lathrop School were early Mechanics High School students in 1903 when the two schools merged to become Fernley High School. In 1906, Fenton Run Coal Company opened an open-pit mine on land that had been used for ranching and farming since before Californias Gold Rush days. For many years this mining giant operated out of what is now downtown Fernley with its grand old red brick building still standing (the company abandoned it in 1957). Other companies that mined coal here include Consolidated Copper which closed its mines here in 1907; American Coal & Coke which closed both its smelters (one located between Main and Third Streets east of town and one off of Second Street) on March 3, 1912; Packed Earth Mining Company which opened mines on October 2, 1916 but closed them within months due to high costs associated with rock fall problems; Garber Coal Corporation until 1951 when they merged into Republic National Bank of Carlsbad; Standard Oil Refining Company until 1972 when they sold their assets to ChevronTexaco who continue to operate their refinery there today as part of Chevron Southern California Inc.; United States Steel Corporation until 1984 when they retired all their production plants north of Fresno CA leaving only their steel mill northeast of town continuing operations as Unifinishedsteel Corp.; Gossamer Lumber Co., successors to White Sands Lumber Co., predecessor company to Western US Lumber Co., active until 1990 when it merged into Pacific Northwest Lumber CO.; Realty Development LLC until 2006 when it became RanchoBernardo LandCoast LLC; finally City Services District #1 formed effective January 1st 2007 by combining various city services functions including watermain replacement/replacement along Old Town Road from Price Boulevard southward throughtowns ending at Kern Valley Rd., fire prevention/firefighting services from Brush Meadows Creek southward throughtowns ending at Price Boulevard; public works projects included widening portions of Price Boulevard from 4th Street eastward throughtowns ending at Kern Valley Rd., installation or relocation (and improvement) of streetlights throughout town beginning approximately at Price Boulevard intersection controlled by Rio Arriba Municipal Utility District #2 also providing necessary storm sewer systems improvements starting approximately near Brush Meadows Creek northward throughtowns ending just beyond Interstate 80 exit 7A North Fork River Road past Anza Borrego Springs State Park
