The first Europeans to visit Fernley were Lieutenant Frontenac and his party of French soldiers on their way to find an entrance into California in 1829. In 1840, A.J. Bevis arrived with his family from Vermont and homesteaded near what is now downtown Fernley. The Bevis home still stands today and is a museum open to the public. In 1881, J.P. Morgan established a ranch at present-day Fernley after purchasing Rancho Las Vegas from the heirs of Don Carlos de Arguelles y Costilla y Ramos for $2 million dollars plus interest (the first property sale in Carson City). Morgan named it RanchoMorgana (later renamed RanchoFernley). Fernley's post office was opened in 1886 by Wm Crayton as FERNLEY PO BOX 514; it ceased operations on July 1, 1961 due to increasing postage rates within Nevada combined with other towns' mail services being consolidated into Reno's Post Office Department that month (it reopened on October 1). In 1916, Rufus Norris built a grocery store and meatpacking facility at what is now Main Street which became one of the most successful businesses in town until its closure in 1978 due to increased competition from larger stores across the state line in neighboring Renoeno Valley (which had already surpassed Fernley as the " buzzing center" of town) vernacular architecture flourishes throughout much of rural central Nevada making this small but proud community unique - note: Some older homes may have been built without nails or screws and some are simply rough hewn logs! According to 2000 census data, there are currently 2 funeral homes serving Fernley residents - both operated by cemeteries located elsewhere within Clark County - one operates out of Church Cemetery off US Highway 95A south of downtown while another provides funerals/funerals services for all types including cremation for numerous people living outside city limits including those buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park northeast of town along I-95 corridor
