Fernley is located in the Clark County School District. The town was first settled by Europeans in 1869. At that time, it was known as "Fernley Station." In 1902, the name of the town was changed to "Fernley" after Arthur Fernald, a rancher and business man who donated land for a post office and school. The first school in Fernley opened in 1911. That same year, the Kern County Agricultural Society established a farm and market at Fernley. In 1916, a water tower was built by the Kern County Water Department at Fernley. In 1930, a public works project included the construction of two roads and a new dam at Fernley. The town experienced some growth during World War II when it became home to several military installations including USAAF Station 474 (now Davis-Monthan AFB). After the war ended, many civilian jobs were created in the local economy while military jobs slowly disappeared or were reassigned to other towns in Clark County. However, unemployment rates gradually began to decline beginning in the late 1960s due to various economic improvements throughout Nevada which led to increased development around Fernley such as an increase in job opportunities for women and more businesses opening up downtown. In 1990, then-Mayor James Aiken passed Measure 1 which aimed to create more opportunity for residents through tax breaks and investment into local businesses. The measure had an extremely positive impact on both tourism and retail trade within FERNLEY thanks to an increase in visitors from surrounding communities who discovered all of its unique attractions as well as more jobs available for locals due to newly developed commercial districts downtown which attracted larger companies like Macy's Inc., Sears Holdings Corporation, JCPenney Corporation and Kohl's department stores among others. Today, Mayor Aiken continues his support of entrepreneurship within FERNLEY by hosting monthly Businessocado events which bring together local entrepreneurs with guests from nearby communities interested in learning about their businesses' strategies & techniques along with networking opportunities
