Fernley is a small town in Storey County, Nevada, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reno–Tahoe metropolitan area. Fernley was founded in 1872 by George Fernley and his wife, Eliza Jane Drury Fernley. George had been born in Ohio and migrated to Nevada when he was eighteen years old with his family. He opened a store in Fernley and started to trade goods with the Native Americans on the Las Vegas Valley floor of what is now known as downtown Reno. In 1879, he married Eliza Jane Drury and they moved to Fernley to start a family. The Drurys were instrumental in growing Fernley into an important community throughout its history; their children became involved in local politics and business until their deaths in 1961 and 1978 respectively. The first settlers arrived on horseback; within two years, they had erected a small cabin near today's intersection of Hwy 395/US 95 and US 95A (the present day cross streets of Fernleys gated community). By 1881, there were six families living here: four from Ohio, one from Canada (John Dicken), one from Scotland (Alexander McKay) - all settling during or shortly after the Gold Rush era which began around 1848 AGO. In 1865-66 John Crain developed what would become known as "Crain's Gulch" off of modern-day US 95A northeast of town limits - this ridge forms much of today's downtown core with views stretching out to both Reno Lake eastward towards Carson City and southward across Watson Lake towards Wendover Peak which can be seen nearly half way down its slopes! This watershed watershed has implications for irrigation waters used by many large ranches that cover parts or all of Storey County including nearby Kings Ranch & Pershing National Monument located just east & west of town limits - while Today much groundwater recharge occurs beneath Devils Garden due northwest along NV 119 approximately coincident with CRain Gulch it seems likely that water levels ebbed & flowed between these respective areas over time creating/impacting Ramsland Lakes ultimately resulting in Waco Creek draining easterly via Horton Dam directly via Horton Creek Road traversing today's Nye Open Space before looping southeastwesterly again via Cutthroat Canyon then flowing underground under present day UMC property before finally rejoining Nevado River about 3 miles northwest &NW Oftown Limits prior to joining current CRain Gullet Wash
Fernley is located in Clark County, Nevada. It was named for General James H. Fernley, who served as a colonel in the Union army during the American Civil War and was later elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate. The town was founded in 1907 by citizens of nearby Easterntowns and became an agricultural center with large irrigated fields. In 1924, Fernley hosted the first international rodeo and thereafter developed into a major livestock market. The population of Fernley grew from 2,000 in 1922 to over 10,000 by 1930. As the largest town in Nevada, Fernley boasted a library, two banks, four churches and dozens of businesses including three hotels and twelve grocery stores throughout its heyday.
