Fernley is a small town in the Eastern Nevada panhandle. It was founded in 1907 by J.P. Fernley and his wife, Emma. The population of Fernley at the 2010 census was 1,946. The Fernley School District serves Fernley and portions of Wellsville and Elko counties. By 1912 it had grown to 100 residents and by 1916 it had reached 150 residents; however its peak occurred during World War I when it reached 200 residents due to the influx of servicemen stationed in nearby Elko County. In 1943 the population decreased to 154 due to a combination of illness, World War II Relocation programs plus military training programs that took place at nearby Reno which outnumbered the population increase in Kern County by 20%.

One of the most notable aspects of this growth is the emergence of two major festivals which are held each year on different days both within reach of Fernley residents and visitors alike - the State Fairivals which take place over Memorial Day weekend (May 27-30) as well as Christmas weekend (December 25-28). These events include fine arts exhibitions from local artists as well as carnival rides, games for all ages and plenty of shopping opportunities for those looking to spend some time outdoors or indoors on these special occasions!
