Fernley is a small town in the U.S. state of Nevada. It lies on the east bank of the Snake River, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) north-northwest of Reno and 15 miles (24 kilometers) west of Battle Mountain. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. Fernley was founded in 1881 by J.D. Fernley, a rancher and politician who served as California's 14th senator from Nevada from 1907 to 1912 and as secretary of state under Governor John Leland Stanford from 1912 to 1916. The first post office in Fernley was established in 1881, and remained in operation until it closed on January 3, 1914. The communityoriginally named "Fernley" developed around an irrigation project that began in 1879 authorized by government landowner James Fenton Beecham to improve water supplies for his rancho de las Brisas y Toro cattle range west of Reno. In 1886, J.D.(Jimmie D.) Fernley purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) east of present-day Fernley from developer George Atherton for $5 per acre ($130 total). This land later became known as the "Fernley Ranch". In 1901, Fenton donated 653 acres (248 hectares), now part of the town limits, to the State University District for use as a college campus; this land was later renamed Regent University Park after Regent University School District superintendent George Wickersham Richardson Jr.. The first store opened in Fernley on November 17, 1881 by Hiram Soper with 12 barrels of oil fuel imported from New Mexico City at $2 per barrel ($40 total). By 1903 there were six stores open along Main Street with a population totaling 396 residents.[1] The first school district opened up here too - Regent University School District #1 which became Regent University when it merged into UNR during World War II[2]. Fernley was founded in 1875 by James L. Fernley, a rancher and miner. The town quickly became a stop on the stagecoach route between Reno and Carson City. By the mid-19th century, Fernley had become a boomtown with an annual population of around 2,000 people. It thrived until the early 20th century when goldmining operations ceased and the town declined in size. It regained some popularity in the late 20th century as a tourist spot for its scenic routes and historic buildings.
