Fernley, Nevada is a small town in the Applegate Valley of central Nevada. The community was founded in 1887 by Mormon pioneers who settled in the area after fleeing persecution from Utah. The name Fernley comes from the Spanish word for "forest" and refers to the local trees that supplied lumber for early settlers. The first ammunition plant in Fernley was built by J.C. Bigham & Sons on Main Street in 1888. This company manufactured field artillery munitions such as buckshot, ball shot, and shrapnel shells. In 1903, a new ammunition plant was built south of town on State Highway 95 by Averell Harriman & Company. This company produced shell casings for rifles and shotguns as well as projectiles for machine guns and cannons. In 1916, another ammunition plant was opened by the same owners at what is now known as Route 30 north of town on private land leased from the Nevada Game Commission. This company produced both rifle rounds (primers) and shotgun round cases (barrels). Ammunition production continued until 1967 when it was discontinued due to dwindling demand for traditional field artillery munitions among military forces across America. Today, there are only a few remaining functioning antique ammo stores throughout central Nevada that still sell various types of cannonball rounds dating back to 1887-1967 inclusive!

Fernley is a locality in Clark County, Nevada, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reno–Sparks metropolitan area. Fernley is located on the eastern edge of Las Vegas Valley and is bordered by Paradise to the north, Mesquite to the west, North Las Vegas to the south and Henderson to the east. The first settlement in what became Fernley was made in 1881 when nine men from Sutterville founded a rancho called Rancho de la Aurora y del Oro about northwest of present-day Fernley. A post office was established at that location in 1882; it was renamed Fernley in 1907 after John H. Fernley, who had bought property there in 1879. In 1911, a group of settlers led by Harry Kappt homesteaded nearpresent-day Fernley on land which they had acquired from ranchers Joseph Purdy and Wm. Hite. Kappt named his new community after himself—the name has been used continuously since then. In 1924 Nellie Mae Jahn became interested in promoting citrus production around her home valley and decided to purchase some acreage northeast of present-day Fernley for that purpose; she began marketing oranges locally as well as exporting them to other parts of Nevada and California during that decade. By 1930 she had developed an orchard covering more than square miles (1 km2). The following year she merged with two other local companies – Eastern Renewable Energy Company and Western Electric Manufacturing Company – forming Desert Fruit & Vegetables Corporation (DFVC). Jahn continued marketing oranges until her death in 1943; thereafter operations were taken over by her son Barry Jahn Jr., who ran it until 1984 when it changed its name again to Desert Fruit Enterprises Inc.; eventually it became known as ABC Corporation.) During World War II much activity took place within immediate vicinity surrounding airfields such as Nellie Mae Jahn’s home valley: More than 2 million tons (1 million metric tons) of munitions were unloaded at nearbyClark Airfield between 1942-1945 alone! In 1946 DFVC acquired additional lands adjacent thereto realigning their holdings into thirteen agricultural fields now comprising Unit 5DEH (Desert Fruits/Vegetables) Cooperative Extension District #5A which encompasses all orchard acreage lying within limits described above plus approximately one hundred acres situated just outside town limits subject only to limitations set forth hereinbelow: three acres reserved for residential development may be used for fruitgrowing purposes only subject also To restrictions placed upon general development plan submitted withFEH application videoconference July 9th 1966 Today this Agricultural Units encompassing nearly 300acre(14 ha) extending northerly beyond limit description hereinabove are marketed under various names including ABC Corporation

After World War II, Fernley experienced growth due to the arrival of new residents and businesses throughout the late 1950s and early 1960s; this led to a resurgence in population over the next few decades until reaching its current level of 1,711 with the 2010 census.
