Fernley had a post office from 1867-1876, and a railroad station from 1870-1872. In 1880, the town had 4 businesses and 14 residents. By 1890, Fernley had 9 businesses and 100 residents. In 1914, Fernley had 12 businesses and 160 residents. The population of Fernley decreased to 100 through 1920 due to World War I and then increased to 130 through 1930 due to the Great Depression. The population of Fernley decreased again during World War II because of the war effort but rose following the end of hostilities in 1945.
