Elko is a small town located in south-central Nevada. The population was 5,868 at the 2010 census. It is bordered by Storey County to the north, Lake Mead National Recreation Area to the east, and Washoe County to the south. The Elko Basin is located within Elko city limits. The first permanent European settler in what is now Elko was José de Arredondo who arrived in 1847. Arredondo named his new land "Las Animas" after two of his daughters, Animas and Anahuacá (meaning "sanctuary"). He died in 1851 while surveying this area for US Rancho San Rafael which he had purchased from Mexican dictator Santa Anna. In 1865 John Sibley established a store at what is now downtown Elko and called it Sibley's Fort. By 1870 there were nine stores in town with an estimated population of 1,500 people. By 1880 there were twenty-one stores and a population of 10,000 people living within city limits only; today only four remain: Sibley's Fort (now City Hall), First National Bank (now Wells Fargo Bank), Rucker Drug Company (now Rite Aid) and United States Postal Service post office at 2nd Street and High Street NE (closed 1989). In 1886 James Wickersham organized the townsite around present day downtown Elko into two villages: North Village near Red Rock Lake on the east side of town then South Village on the west side; both villages formed part of Townshend Township until 1907 when they seceded to form their own independent municipality known as North Elko Municipality which still exists today as a separate incorporated entity governed by its own mayor & council with its own government buildings including City Hall Annex & Mayor's Office building on High Street NE between Second Avenue & Third Avenue NE." A school opened at what is now Elmira School District No./No.'s 1-4 about 1892 followed by White Sands Normal School about 1895 before finally becoming Northern Nevada Agricultural Experiment Station/later University Of California ~1902 - 1903 also renamed University Of California~ Niwot Campus~ Niwot Campus~ 1910s - 1920s due to UC affiliation with nearby Regents Park campus during World War I; same name since 1935 when Regents Park campus became UC Berkeleycampus Elk Grove Heights Elementary School Opened 1912 closed 1977 moved into current site off Hwy 100 next door to水庫中心 open 1908 along side Chinese restaurant

Elko is located in the extreme western corner of Nevada. It was founded in 1877 by a group of prospectors led by Royal Dutch Shell CEO Sir John Sutherland. The town quickly became a mining and ranching center, with extensive gold and silver mining operations taking place until the early 20th century. The area now known as Elko was first populated by Native Americans, who lived near the mines and ranches. After gold was discovered in nearby Southeastern Nevada, however, white settlers began to arrive in increasing numbers, followed by Mexicans during the late 19th century. In 1907, Elko became an incorporated city after it passed a referendum vote to secede from its larger neighbor Reno. As gambling centers came to prominence throughout much of America during the 1920s and 1930s, Elko experienced rapid growth as a result – becoming one of the country's most heavily commercialized towns by the end of that decade. However, World War II caused significant social unrest within the community; as racial tensions ratcheted up nationally, Elko saw sporadic violence between both races over various issues such as police brutality or housing discrimination. In recent years, however, Elko has seen impressive revitalization efforts spearheaded by Mayor Tony Meek and his team; including new development projects such as an urban park and new library/community center complex.
