Elko, Nevada is the largest city in Elko County and the seat of government. It was founded in 1875 by Mormon missionaries. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its location at the head of a wagon road linking Prescott and Reno. A post office was established in 1879, and a large mill was built in 1886. In 1925, Elko became an independent city. In 1950, it annexed neighboring Mineral Wells. The population increased rapidly following World War II as new housing developments were constructed along Interstate 80. The economy has been based largely on ranching and farming since the late 20th century; however, Elko is now home to several high-tech companies. Elko, Nevada is a small town located in Clark County, Nevada. The population was 5,752 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clark County and home to the Elko National Forest. The first people to live in what is now Elko were Paiute Indians who hunted and gathered plants and animals near where they lived today. The white man first came to Elko in 1874 when he led an expedition into what is now Nevada Territory looking for land to settle. He named the area after his friend and business partner, Joseph Ely, Sr., who had come over from Illinois as part of a wagon train headed northward. Elko, Nevada is an unincorporated community in Elko County, Nevada. It is located at latitude 34.5 degrees and longitude 117.8 degrees north, on the Elk River near its confluence with the Reno–Sparks River. The population of Elko was 1,946 as of the 2010 census[1]. The first Europeans to visit what is now Elko were fur traders travelling up the Sacramento Valley in search of trade goods with tribes living there. In 1847 Captains John C. Frémont and Nathaniel Banks expedition discovered Gold Rush territory here and started mining for gold in earnest in 1849-50; they soon after ordered all available men to return home before running out of supplies or finding new land to explore. The town began as a Stagecoach stop on the route from Carson City east through Tonopah Valley to Fort Bridger on the Great Salt Lake (now part of Las Vegas). A post office was established at Elko on January 10, 1861,[2] and remained open until it was discontinued by mail February 1, 1912 due to budget cuts by then-Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal coalition government.[3] In 1935 local developer Harry Chandler bought 7 miles (11 km) east of town along Elk River for $350,000 from Hootie Coleman; he developed it into one of America's first "rust belt" towns—a manufacturing center built around heavy industry such as aluminum production, coalmining and steelmaking—renewed growth following World War II until suburbs replaced downtown populations with suburbanites and away from riverfront businesses that had sustained downtown commerce since early settlement Times changed again during the late 1960s when hippies came through town seeking marijuana crops while other white mainstream people left for greener pastures elsewhere; this time downtown experienced a revival dubbed "Elk Restoration" which lasted until 1985 when development led to loss or destruction of many original buildings including much surviving architecture despite efforts by preservationists who tried since 1971

The growth of Elko slowed during World War I but resumed following World War II until it peaked in 1950 at 15,000 people. In 2000, the population declined to 8,600 people and it has since fallen back to 7,100 people.
