Elko, Nevada is a town in Clark County, Nevada, United States. The population was 9,379 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clark County. The name Elko comes from the Bannock word "elk," meaning deer or antelope. The first permanent settlement in what is now Elko was made by Captain John C. Fremont and his men on July 14, 1853 during their exploration of the Las Vegas Valley. They named their new settlement after General William S. Worth's battle against Native American forces at Battle of Washita River in November 1847 which led to Mission San Francisco de Asís being founded two months later on October 15th by Father José Ortiz and brother Lorenzo de la Cueva along with twenty-five other priests as part of Rancho Santiago delgada Viejo Mexican land grant. Fremont named it for General James Kapp Purdy who had been killed at the Battle of Palo Alto on September 25th, 1850 while leading a force composed of regulars and militia under Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer against Apaches under Chief Manuel Armijo y Ulloa near present day Reno City Limits in what is now eastern Carson City NV In 1873 when gold was discovered in nearby Virginia City it became an important stop on stagecoach routes between Sacramento and Fort Worth through central Nevada In 1902 Elko incorporation as a city followed by its election as county seat five years later In 1912 The Great Salt Lake Earthquake hit Elko killing many people and including damage to much downtown business The community experienced another big quake that year magnitude 7.7 causing significant damage but no loss of life On August 28th 1969 local high school student Don Freeman set off an explosive device hidden inside some rocks located just north of Main Street SW entrance to town center about one half mile east from School boundaries ) Dressed only in short pants with no shirt he walked over IED ( Improvised Explosive Device) planted beneath large boulder several hundred yards northeast from where he left his backpack
