Elko is a town in Nevada, United States. The population was 7,531 at the 2010 census. It is located in Southern Nevada on the Elko River. The name "Elko" comes from the Apache word "aloki". The first European to explore the area was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on December 14, 1542. After his return journey he named it San Salvador de Guadalupe y Costilla after Saint Salvator of Mexico City (now Guanajuato). In 1795, surveyor David Balfour discovered gold in the area and named it Elko after him because of this discovery. In 1864 General Ulysses S. Grant established Fort Washoe near present-day Elko to defend mining claims in what is now Northern Nevada against Native Americans who were also claiming land for themselves. After several years of harassment by the military, white miners started arriving in droves and began settling around Fort Washoe starting in 1868. By 1870 California chemist John Wesley Powell had come to see potential mines there and recommended that they be explored further north as early as possible before supplies ran low due to war with Mexico or natural disasters like floods . A group of men led by prospector J.D.. Hickenlooper traveled downriver from Reno on July 2, 1871 and encountered Native American hostility when they reached an old settlement known as Pahona about 4 miles upstream from where they disembarked their boats; this encounter set off a rampage that resulted in more than 20 dead natives and six whites killed including Hickenlooper and prospector James Wickersham This event helped spur development at Fort Washoe which eventually became Carson City while Pahona continued under Indian control until 1862 when it was surrendered by its occupants to US forces under commander Major General George Armstrong Custer
