In Elko, Nevada there are many gun parts history. There have been guns in the city for over 100 years and some of the earliest firearms were made here. In 1875, a man by the name of George Hinkle bought a rifle from Captain John Hatton at what is now the Elko Rifle & Pistol Store. The store was located on Second Street and it is still in business today. Hinkle started making rifles and pistols here in Elko, but he also began selling parts for other guns. One of his early clients was Captain John Hatton who needed to buy new sights for his rifle. George Hinkle helped him out and gave him a set of old sights that he had saved from his previous jobs as an engineer on a canal project in Illinois. Over time, George Hinkle became very successful here in Elko with his rifles and pistols. He built up a large stock of parts for other weapons and even created his own production line to make his own barrels, stocks, triggers, etc.. His company continued to be successful until around 1915 when World War I intervened and demand for military arms decreased drastically. As World War I ended, many businesses closed down due to the war or because they couldn’t compete against government prices that were much higher than normal prices. However, George Hinkle refused to stop making weapons altogether – he continued producing them side-by-side with civilian products until about 1925 when he retired from business altogether due to health reasons. The two main industries that have been headquartered in Elko are mining and manufacturing. In 1967, Gold Mountain Mining Co., which had been active since 1906, merged with American Fuel & Paint Ltd.. This made Elko one of only a handful of cities in the country where both businesses were still operational as single entities--a rarity even today among major metropolitan areas. Mining has also long been a significant source of revenue for Elko residents and their businesses—in 1990 alone, mining generated $228 million for local coffers and supported nearly 5,000 jobs across all sectors within the community. A recent development within this industry has been fracking—the natural gas extraction process used to extract oil and gas from shale formations deep underground—which has drawn increased attention from energy companies interested in exploiting these resources hereabouts (and elsewhere). But while fracking could provide significant economic opportunities for locals over time if done safely and responsibly enough so that local schools can continue educating children about drilling processes and other environmental risks associated with Pike formation coalmining operations nearby (see Fracking: What You Should Know), right now there’s no clear path ahead for those seeking to capitalize on this new technology without first acquiring full-blown permits from government regulators who seem determined not to make this kind of investment lightly or at all given public concerns over potential water shortages caused by fracked wells sites well beyond any breathing humans or animals likely to be impacted by them should such things go wrong? As reported by Forbes magazine late last year: "In just 10 years hydraulic fracturing (fracking) will become America’s biggest energy production sector," Watts Up With That! reports that a number of energy companies are already investing heavily here in Nevada specifically “to exploit [shale] resources Bunker Hill Resources LLCFrackCoal Inc., Encana Corp., Noble Energy NV [and] Phillips 66 Coelho LP” Asdrubal Cabrera told Forbes he expects drillers working “vertically down into shale rocks up to 4 kilometers thick …[to be able to produce] up to 6 trillion cubic feet per day [of gas], equivalent to taking New York City off its grid." If successful--and more importantly if Clean Water Act jurisdictional restrictions on drinking water supplies around these locations aren't lifted soon--this represents yet another blow against federal efforts aimed at curbing climate change via renewable energy sources like solar/wind power while also securing our drinking water supply future generations may have difficulty REPLACING
