The name means "place where the fire always burns." The town was founded by Mormons in 1867 as part of their wagon train from Nauvoo, Illinois to California. The first settlers were British subjects who named their land after Lord Elgin. By 1875, when Mormon pioneers arrived in what is now Elko Valley, they had renamed it for themselves because they believed that God would give them eternal life there if they named their land after Himself. In 1876, Brigham Young named the surrounding areas around his Fort Bridger west of present-day Elko Valley post office "Elko," which led to its current name and history as an important center for Mormon colonization in central Nevada. In 1907, when new federal laws allowed mining and oil exploration near populous residential areas such as Reno andLas Vegas, local entrepreneurs formed a company called Northern Mines Limited to exploit these resources. After years of failed attempts to connect mines with railroads or get prices for minerals low enough to make profitable production possible, fortunes changed with the discovery of oil shale under downtown Reno in 1923 by John Drexel Hammett Jr., one of the early developers of Las Vegas. With this breakthrough development came economic opportunities not available before and investment flowed into Elko at an unprecedented rate during this time period. Elko's continuing growth has been based upon its location; it is only 15 minutes' drive from both Reno and Las Vegas along Interstate 95 while still remaining within reach by car or bus for all residents outside those cities limits
Elko was founded in 1867 by George C. Marshall, a United States army officer who had played a leading role in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. The town grew rapidly after railroad construction began nearby, and in 1907 it became the county seat of Elko County. By 1959, Elko had an estimated population of over 50,000 people.
