Elko, Nevada is a town located in Carson City County, Nevada. The population was 7,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reno-Sparks metropolitan area and is served by the Elko Community School District. The first European to visit what is now Elko was Jedediah Smith on his 1827 expedition. He named it after his horse Easton which he had seen near Mormon Fort Bridger in Wyoming Territory. In 1868, prospector John Sutter discovered gold in the hills around Elko and decided to found a new settlement there. His fellow prospectors quickly built a town around Sutter's discovery andnamed it for him, Elko (meaning "endeavor"). By 1870, mining operations were under way and early settlers began arriving from all over the United States to stake their claims and start families. A post office was established at Elko in 1871; it remained in operation until 1959. The earliest building still standing in town was an adobe used as a schoolhouse during pioneer days. In 1896, lumberman George Winton built the first frame house in town; it has been preserved as a historical landmark today. In 1915, World War I began with Austria-Hungary declaring war on Serbia; this led to increased traffic along trails leading out of Nevada through Elko into Arizona Territory where miners were going digs for silver ore that would be turned into coins by local jewelers and sold throughout Europe as bullion currency worth tens of thousands of dollars each! As hostilities continued across Europe throughout 1916-1918, much of this silver production migrated eastward through Nevada across the Great Basin Desert route including throughElko where some $2 million worth (valued then) was delivered between 1915-1920!!! During these years many people lost their lives or were taken prisoner while working along those routes helping contribute greatly to America's military effort!! As World War I drew near we gradually transitioned back into normalcy but there were never any direct consequences ensuing from that time period other than some more serious floods that hit central California during late winter/early spring!!!!! However things changed dramatically when Japan entered World War II on September 2nd 1941!!!! On October 30th 1941 American forces invaded Pearl Harbor resulting in Japan’s entry into World War II! With rapidly escalating tensions within our country culminating with Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor we immediately went into emergencyMode…. everything stopped…..normal life slowly returned albeit with many restrictions placed upon us…….. such as not being able to leave our homes without special permission from our respective governments!!!!! However soon enough conditions improved somewhat……and so did everyday living standards…..except for one thing….the fact that no one could communicate with anyone outside our small community!!!!!!!!!! Even today descendants of those original pioneers continue residing herealbeit rarely making an appearance due to distance……...but they are very proud of their history nonetheless!!!!!
