Elko, Nevada is a city in Butte County, Nevada, United States. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Butte County. A post office has been in Elko since 1907. The town site of present-day Elko was first settled by Mormons in 1847 as part of the Great Basin mission district. In 1848 Mormon General James Fenton arrived here with his brigade to survey and lay out for the LDS Church what would become Butte County. The town was founded on July 15, 1848 by Brigham Young and Heber C. Kimball as Fort Alma (later renamed Nauvoo) on a small elevation near present-day downtown Elko. Fort Alma became an important military base during Joseph Smith's translation of the Bible and early Mormon Councils during their efforts to establish a theological center in Utah Territory stretching from Salt Lake City to Provo, UT Fremont Peak (a mountain located east-northeast of today's Elko) served as both fortification and religious symbol for settler David Whiteman when he built his home there in 1850; Whiteman also named his creek after Mount Nebo which he saw while journeying through Utah Valley on horseback 4 years earlier that year In 1861 Captain John Waddell laid out a new township adjacent to Fort Bridger called Carbon Hill Township but it never grew past a few hundred residents because there were no good sites for farming within three miles of Bridgertown proper . Colonel Charles Wickersham organized local militia forces under command of Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer to repel Sioux Indians who attacked this area on November 25, 1862 killing eight people including Wickersham In 1865 Major Civil War General Ulysses S Grant ordered all troops withdrawn from Montana Territory including Butte County except for two units under his command at Carbon Hill So about one half of Andrade’s original Mexican labor force fled north across the American River into Oregon Territory before or after their deportation ; some 3200 Mexicans had already crossed into Northern California by wintergreening along US trails south from Baja California before Grant’s order arrived There has been much debate over whether these free Mexican men actually deserted or simply took advantage of offers from Anglo farmers in Nevada or far away not wanting war with Mexico - some historians believe they may have genuinely intended never returning home Nonetheless most Ofrede’s original Mexican laborers ended up becoming citizens of America finally achieving full social rights provided they fulfilled certain Requirements such as owning land and voting , most notably providing agricultural produce at government auctions overseen by federal agents until recently This helped create what came to be known as “the Mexican Gulch” around town today where many Hispanic families still live cheek-by-jowl with white residents despite repeated driveoffs/attacks throughout recent history culminating with Monday night's violence involving several dozen mostly white participants armed only with bats and fists
Elko was founded in 1849 by gold miners. The town became a post office in 1852, and soon developed into a prosperous mining community. In the early 1860s, Elko became an important stop on the Northern Pacific Railroad. In 1865, the town was attacked by Confederate forces, and many of its residents were killed or taken prisoner. After the war, Elko experienced a period of growth as a result of its attractiveness as a commercial center. The population increased from around 200 in 1870 to over 3,000 by 1900. However, during World War II Elko suffered significant damage from Japanese bombers and artillery shelling. As a result of these events, the population decreased sharply and there is now only about 100 people living in the town today.
