In the early 1800s, Elko was a small town in Nevada. It was platted in 1875, and became a county seat in 1881. At that time, there were only five gunslingers in the entire county. The first gun grip to settle in Elko was Wm. Fenton, who arrived in 1878. He built a stockade around his home and started trading firearms with other settlers. By 1886, there were twenty-six gun grips living in Elko County. The growth of thegun industry during the 19th century led to the development of a strong demand for handguns by law enforcement and civilians alike. This led to new methods of manufacturing handguns such as forging aluminum receivers instead of brass, which made handguns more durable and less likely to malfunction during use. In addition, this increased production also allowed manufacturers to increase their profits margins and sell products at lower prices to consumers. Today,Elko is home to one of the most significant concentrations of gun grips in Nevada. The Elko Gun Grip company was founded in 1923 by George W. Welch and his brother-in-law, Harry S. Cook Jr. The company made handguns and shotguns, as well as 1911 pistols. They also manufactured a variety of ammo brands including Winchester, Remington, and Savage Arms. In the late 1940s and early 1950s the Welch brothers sold their business to Cabelas Incorporated.

Elko is a small town in Nevada, located about an hour and a half north of Reno. It population is just over 3,000 residents, making it the smallest community in Clark County. The town was founded by Mormons in 1907 as part of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. The Mormon pioneers who founded Elko were among the first Hispanics to come to Nevada. They arrived on horseback and started building their own homes before they ever ventured into town. Today, many Elko residents are descendants of these early settlers. The first store in Elko was operated by John Sibley and his son George Sibley. John Sibley had come from Utah and owned a ranch near Cedar City which he used to sell goods to miners working in the nearby gold fields. He also ran a mill hereabouts that ground flour for local breadwinners. In 1907, when the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge was created within the Malheur Range national park, Elko became one of its initial settlements. At that time, only men could vote- so women didn’t even exist on this new reservation until 1930! In 1962, when Nevadan statehood was granted to Nevada, Elko became part of that state’s newly formed Carson Valley district- becoming one of its most populous districts! From 1959-1964, Bob Hope starred in several television commercials for Home Depot hereabouts;[1] during those years there wasn’t much else going on in town but shopping! In recent years things have picked up somewhat;[2] now there is a library (opened in 2006), several restaurants (all open late night),[3] and some nice homes being built too!
