Elko, Nevada is a town in Southern Nevada and the county seat of Nye County. The population was 3,814 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Elko Valley on the eastern edge of the Mojave Desert about 45 miles (72 km) east of Las Vegas and about 145 miles (230 km) south of Reno. The first firearms were made in Elko by José Rivera and his brother-in-law Manuel Ortiz in 1875. The early guns were muzzleloaders that fired balls with lead shot and feathers. In 1892, George Ellis began manufacturing rifles in Elko and soon became known as one of America's leading rifle manufacturers. In 1899, Wm. Halsey began making machineguns in Elko and quickly became a major player in the firearms industry. By 1912, all six companies had been established in Elko: George Ellis Rifle Company, Wm. Elko, Nevada is a town in Clark County, Nevada. It is the county seat of Clark County and was incorporated on November 10, 1912. The population was 6,837 at the 2000 census. The name "Elko" is Spanish for "the bear." The first known inhabitants of Elko were Native American people who lived there for centuries before European settlers arrived in the area in 1847. They were followed by Mexican Americans who came to Elko in 1848. The United States military established a presence in the area during World War II and built Fort Sumter here in 1942 as part of Operation Neptune's Spear, which aimed to stop Japanese forces from invading America. In 1951, the United States Air Force activated nearby Las Vegas Airport as an airbase for bomber operations over Elko and other parts of Nevada. Today, Elko is one of the largest economic engines within Clark County with its many businesses and institutions that support local residents and provide jobs for locals. In 1912, when it became apparent that Reno would not be annexed into Union City because it did not have enough water rights (Reno had won a lawsuit against Union City), Mayor Winton Watts proposed incorporation of what would become known as "Elko." At first glance this appears to be simply another case of settlement by peaceful means; however even more interesting about this particular incorporation is that it occurred only days after an attempted lynching of two Anglo-American men near Washoe Springs by angry Navajo Indians across the valley – something that served as a rallying cry for anti-immigrant sentiment throughout much Northern California during those early years following prohibition (and especially after Gold Rush era Tucson had solidified its status as Phoenix). As such we can see some significant progress being made towards racial equality at least temporarily while white businessmen continued to hoard all water resources - an issue we still face today!
Elko was founded in 1868 as a small community on the banks of the Elko River. The town grew rapidly and by 1892 it had reached its present size. In 1907, the railroad arrived in Elko and soon after, a number of businesses and industries sprang up including flour mills, lumberyards, mines, laundry facilities and more. The population swelled rapidly during the years following World War I and by 1920 Elko had become one of the most populous towns in Nevada.
