In 1932, The Winchester Arms Company was established in Elko with two factories producing shotguns and handguns. At this time elkonite limestone was being mined near the town limits which led to the company’s naming their products “elkonite” products because of their prevalence near the mineral resources. In 1949, Alcoa purchased Winchester Arms Company for $188 million USD making it one of America’s largest munitions companies during that period. Alcoa merged with Bethlehem Steel Corporation in 1979 creating US Munitions Incorporated (USM). This company was responsible for all aspects of Ammunition manufacturings from raw materials acquisition through finished product distribution including marketing, sales support services to retailers as well as manufacturing operations throughout North America

The city is located on the Elko River and lies within the Las Vegas metropolitan area. The region around Elko was first settled by Native Americans in the 18th century. A fort was built here in 1795 and named Fort Smith after President George Washington’s military commander in North America during the American Revolution. In 1864, General Crook led an army through this valley to march on Sacramento from east to west and capture it from Mexican forces; this event is commemorated by a statue of General Crook outside of town. At its peak as a mining community in the late 1800s, Elko had 1,200 residents and 20 businesses employing more than 100 workers. It declined following World War I when many miners returned to their home countries or took other jobs; however, it began to rebound following World War II with new production of aluminum cans and other products. In 1955–1956, Elko hosted the world’slargest exhibition of rock music – Elvis Presley’s “At Sun Records” tour – which helped stimulate local music industry growth; today it remains one of only two cities worldwide where rock concerts are still held annually (the other being Amsterdam). However, as recently as 1996-1997 not one resident out of 639 lived beyond age 65 years old; today there are over 200 elderly citizens living within walking distance of all central business district activities including groceries stores and pharmacies. Today's economy is based largely upon tourism but also includes manufacturing such as food processing and fabricated metal products; recent additions include health care services such as ambulance service and chiropractor services.
