In 1865 President Andrew Johnson sent Major General George Crook with 1,500 men to lead an expedition against Shoshone Indians east of the Great Salt River Range known as Crook's Fort Expedition which resulted inthe Battle of Sand Creek (February 27-29 1865). American forces were victorious but Shoshone Chief Washakie was killed and two hundred warriors were captured including Crazy Horse who later escaped into Mexico where he joined Geronimo’s band led by Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna Carson City was founded by James Waddell on September 15 1870 while working as surveyor for Pacific Railroad Company from Oregon Territory over which he had been appointed by President Ulysses S Grant based on recommendations from Mormon leader Brigham Young personally escorted by Waddell himself during his visit to Utah Territory earlier that year On December 12 1875 Charles Goodyear organized San Francisco & Southern Pacific Railway Company from north southern California over which he had been appointed president by company director Hiram Seaborn just before Grant arrived in Utah Territory to take office as Ulysses S Grant’s first Governor General Goodyear soon sold sections of his railway through what are now Reno and other townsites along its route including those within today's Carson City boundaries forming what would become known as Northern Arizona Mining District . On January 9 1880 Goodyear organized First Hispanic Cavalry Regiment Nevada Volunteers under command Lt Col Avila & Capt Manuel Alvarez due to fears Mexican Americans would overrun Las Vegas valley following recent debates over citizenship issues between Mexicans living southward beyond designated areas such as Los Angeles & Phoenix corrido mining district .. goods moved through this region included cattle products saltpeters coal oil wood fiber ropes hemp etc prior to railroads development . By 1889 some 2 million metric tons worth $10 million worthof freight had passed thru these local ports annually averaging 10% or more volume all while goods movement increased 50%
