This was an old fortification built by the Mormons in 1847. The next target set up in Carson City was the "New Fort" which was located on 6th Street between Capitol and California Streets. This fortification served as a prison during World War I and also held military supplies for the Nevada Army National Guard. In 1927, gunners from surrounding towns began participating in annual tournaments at "The Range" located near present-day Southern Pacific Railroad tracks east of town. These tournaments were designed to promote rifle shooting among local citizens and provide opportunities for young people to learn about firearms and participate in competition. The range has since been replaced by another facility, but its legacy lives on with today's annual rifle shoot championship hosted at The Range each spring.
