The history of firearms in Carson City, Nevada goes back to the 1860s. At that time, the area was part of the Mexican Territory and most of what is now Carson City was undeveloped. However, ranchos and other land purchases led to the development of a large population in what is today Carson City. Gunmakers started arriving in Nevada during this period and soon began producing pistols, shotguns, rifles, and even handguns. In 1868, an act was passed by Congress that allowed citizens of Nebraska and Wyoming to purchase arms without having to go through military or government channels. This sparked a wave of gun sales in Nevada. By 1872, there were more than 100 manufacturers operating in Carson City. The industry boomed until 1876 when silver prices collapsed and 74% of all firearms production ceased due to the depression caused by it. Many guns from this time have been lost or forgotten over time. However, some old weapons still remain on display at several local museums including the Reno Museum of Art and History; Western Heritage Museum; The Oldsmobile Museum; TheGunnery Shop & Range; The Arsenal Armsmith Shop; as well as at various shooting ranges across town such as Black Hills Rifle & Pistol Club (now known as Black Hills Ammunition), Red Rock Shooter’s Club (now known as Red Rock Shooting Company), Surefire Firearms Academy (now known as NRA American Eagle Academy), etc.

In 1865, Ulysses S. Grant granted land comprising present-day Carson City to George Armstrong Custer for his cavalry regiment during the American Civil War based on his battlefield victory at Palo Alto over Mexico’s Santa Anna unit on November 6,1865; Grants proclamation that day designated Carson City “the Capital Territory of Nevada” following Union victories at Mill Creek Bridge and Gettysburg over Confederate forces two weeks later. With water supplies becoming increasingly uncertain due to gold discoveries near Laughlin in northern Nevada and deposits around Yucca Springs straddling southern Arizona into California, White House correspondents reportedPresident Abraham Lincoln authorizing Congress December 10th through 12th, 1865 – less than a month after Custer’s battle – to establish an Army Military District headquartered at Omaha Beach east of Reno along with General John J Pershing’s newly created Fifth Cavalry Corps under Major General George Armstrong Custer commanding all troops within that district including those serving under Lieutenant Colonel Marcus Daly who had succeeded Captain Cornelius Chandler as Commanding Officer Ninth Infantry Regiment US Volunteers stationed at Desert Hot Springs also within that military district; this order authorized Pershing’s force to march northwest from Reno down Plumas Creek valley past Mojave Pass into southern California where it would join General Crook’s column approaching Yuma Valley from Chihuahua crossing Baja Colorado Settlement continued apace with homesteaders building adobe strongholds around Truckee Wells Well Reserve before Hispanic Mexicans moved into town beginning in 1868 when Don José Hernandez organized Republican party cells among local ranchers opposing Reconstruction measures enacted by then President Andrew Johnson resulting in several thousand federal civilian holdouts surrendering arms following public meetings throughout Nevada August 14 & 16ernin Most key towns incorporated by 1870 including Carson City but far away Raton acquired incorporation January 1st 1871 growing rapidly becoming one of largest towns west of Sacramento

The history of Carson City began with small settlements near present-day Reno and Hawthorne on both sides of the Sacramento River. By 1850, there were only three homes hereabouts—the tiny Pahrump Valley Settlement on North Creek nearpresent-day Interstate 80 eastbound off exit 68A (now I‑580), Helena Settlement south of downtown on Arkansas Street just across from what is now county courthouse square northwest corner First Ward; and John Cordon’s Store northeast corner Second Ward line south side old US 50 (Old Hwy 50) between NV National Guard Armory which served as Post Office until 1960 and Judge George Hinkle’s Store southeast corner Third Ward line just north side old US 50 eastbound off exit 68B (now I‑580). All these early settlements were short lived due to bad water conditions (−100 degrees Celsius temperatures year round) typical for region at that time combined with numerous Indian raids during this Era known collectively as “The Great Sioux War” or “The Great American War”; however they laid down some valuable foundation for future communities that would form throughout Washoe County during this era including Winnemucca Landing west side High Sierra Road about 7 miles long parallel to present day Ouray Lake about 8 miles east side Lahontan Mountains about 12 miles northwest corner White Sands Missile Range approximately 15 miles southwest corner today's Reno

By World War I, Carson City hadgrown to become one of Nevada's largest cities.
