Boulder City, Nevada is a small town located in Clark County, Nevada. The population was 1,794 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Reno-Sparks Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Boulder City were Paiute Indians who called it "Napa Foothills". They constructed small villages here until around 1827 when gold was discovered in what is now California and they quickly moved their operations northward into present-day Nevada. The first white settlement in what became Boulder City was made by Captain George Gunnison on July 20, 1864 as the result of his purchase of 3,000 acres (1 km2) of land from the Pahamanas tribe for $5 per acre ($100 per kilometer). At that time there were only about 50 people living in Carson City. On January 14, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln issued an executive order creating Ute Indian Territory which included all of present-day Clark County and parts of ancient San Francisco County as well as most of eastern Utah Territory. The order provided for military command over Native Americans within Indian Territory and for allotment of lands to them except those living on reservations where they had continued to reside under British control since 1795. As part of this arrangement with Great Britain, many Paiute Indians were forced off their reservations and into new areas such as southeastern Nevada where they encountered rich gold deposits but also hostile Apache Apache tribespeople who raided their settlements indiscriminately. In 1870s some Paiutes settled near present-day Hoover Dam while others lived along the Wasatch Front until 1880 when they were pushed out by federal troops following a years long uprising against white settlers led by Chief Jack Wilson known as the Washoe War ().
