Boulder City was founded in 1868 by Captain John W. Castle and his wife, Fannie Dodge. The city was named for Colorado's 3rd congressional district, Boulder County. In 1870, the first post office in Boulder City was established. In 1876, the United States Congress passed a bill providing for statehood for Nevada and its new county of Carson County. The county seat of Carson County was moved from Reno to Boulder City in 1877. In 1907, Route 66 opened up through Nevada and passed through Boulder City on its way to California. The town became a popular tourist spot because of its wide variety of architecture and attractions including the University of Nevada at Boulder (UNB), which is now UNLV University; the Pioneer Museum; and Canyon Lake Resort
