Boulder City, Nevada was founded on January 24, 1902 by the merger of two small towns in Carson County: Boulder and City. The town was named for Colorado's first Senator John P. The population of Boulder City grew slowly until World War I when it exploded thanks to military training and construction projects undertaken by the Reno-Monaco Railroad. By 1941, however, population growth had stalled and job opportunities were scarce due to the advent of World War II. However, during the late 1940s and early 1950s Boulder City became an important center for mining operations due to extensive deposits of silver and gold found near its boundaries. In 1968-1969, Boulder City experienced one of its most significant changes when it became home to what is now known as Hoover Dam National Recreation Area. This project was spearheaded by then-President Lyndon B Johnson and his wife Lady Bird Johnson with the goal of creating a national park that would include a number of scenic vistas overlooking Lake Mead as well as other water resources used by agriculture and industry. At that time Boulder City also saw heavy development with new housing developments being built near city limits while casinos were established along Interstate 15 in nearby Mesquite. Since 2000s there has been significant gentrification taking place within city limits with more high end shops opening up alongside lower priced properties including some formerly inhabited by low income residents or people who did not have access to amenities such as schools or water supply systems
