The city was originally named "New Prague" after the town in Czechoslovakia that had been renamed Prague just before South Sioux City's founding. After the war ended South Sioux City experienced rapid growth as various companies relocated there from other parts of Nebraska or Iowa due to wartime shortages of materials such as food and labor. In 1927 Omaha annexed Douglas County which made South Sioux City its new county seat; however this annexation did not result in any significant economic changes because Douglas County already had a county seat within its own borders - North Platte - which served as the capital of Douglas County until 1935 when Omaha moved its government theretoward (owing to fears that Lincoln County would become too large and ungovernable). Despite this lack of impact on local economy, annexation did result in some major infrastructure projects such as construction of Interstate 80 through Douglas County (which opened up much agricultural land for development) and creation of parks such as Mount Rushmore National Monument near downtown South Sioux City along with numerous small villages nearby including West Jordan (later absorbed into Omaha), Brainerd ( absorption into Minneapolis), Veena Park (later absorbed into Cedar Rapids), etc.; these developments helped make up for any social declines brought about byDouglas' separation from Midwestern culture more than two decades earlier. During post-war boom timesSouth SiouxCity experienced increased traffic congestion caused by newly built interstate highways connecting Chicago with Indianapolis through Nebraska/Iowa/Minnesota; however despite complaints from residents about high speed limits around townspeople remained largely indifferent until 1978 when then-mayor Don Nehlen proposed raising speed limits on all streets within city limits to 55 mph following complaints from motorists who felt they were being singled out due to their ethnicity or sexism; this proposal was approved 9-2 with only one abstention (. . .) The resulting increase in safety standards turned out be beneficial both for drivers on busy streets and pedestrians who now had easy access to crossing signals without fear that cars would run them off the road (an occurrence frequently reported during previous generations).
