South Sioux City, Nebraska is a town in Kearney County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 103 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs, NE Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlers in what would become South Sioux City were people from Iowa who crossed the Missouri River in 1871. The city was founded on the same day as Kearney, Nebraska by a group of men from Iowa led by H.L. Mencken and others who had seen an opportunity to build a railroad junction south of Omaha while they were still waiting for their state's approval of the line. South Sioux City was not only an important railway junction; it also became known for its temperance movement which began to take root here in the 1870s after anti-alcohol sentiments had been simmering for some time among pioneer communities throughout America. In 1886, prohibitionists unsuccessfully lobbied Congress to pass a law prohibiting liquor sales within 100 miles of any public school or theater; however this did nothing to dissuade residents from buying drinks at local saloons which continued until prohibition was repealed thirty years later in 1933. During World War II (1939-1945), South Sioux City played host to many military units and personnel stationed there due to its proximity to Decatur, Illinois and Omaha Beach; it also served as headquarters for Third Army during Operation Market Garden (the battle that ended World War II). Afterward, many soldiers returned home and South Sioux City slowly regained its former prominence as a retail center beforedeclining again starting in the late 1990s when Interstate 80 construction bypassed it and eliminated most of its businesses along with much of its population growth since then. In recent decades South Sioux City has enjoyed growth through job creation opportunities resulting from new industrial plants located nearby including Alcoa aluminum smelters (now owned by Rio Tinto) along I-80's route southwest into North Dakota and Encinal Refinery operated by Plains Alloys Incorporated just north of town on U S Highway 24 about two miles east of exits 241A/B on US Highway 20G (former Route 12). This development has resulted in increased access to both jobs and housing options for residents while preserving much of downtown South Sioux City's nearly century old architecture including several hundred buildings listed on the National Register Of Historic Places

South Sioux City, Nebraska is a city in the U.S. state of Nebraska and the county seat of Johnson County. The population was 48,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha–Council Bluffs Combined Statistical Area. South Sioux City is located on the Missouri River and its banks are lined with cornfields, soybean farms, and other agricultural land. The original inhabitants were Sioux Indians who had been living in this area for centuries before white settlers arrived in 1846. The first settler to arrive in what is now South Sioux City was George Stephenson in 1847. He built a cabin on the site where he now lives and named it Stephenson's Grove after himself and his brother James Stephenson, who also founded nearby Council Bluffs (now Omaha). A post office was established at Stephenson's Grove in 1849, and mail service began between Council Bluffs and South Sioux City that year. In 1860, the town became organized as a village when it was chosen as county seat by a vote of residents; however, it did not become an official city until 1893.[1] In 1902, South Sioux City annexed neighboring Iowa City; however, Iowa City retained its own government until 1907 when it became part of Omaha under Mayor John Wahlstroms administration[2]. On February 14, 1916 during World War I,[3] local military units from across eastern Nebraska fought together against German forces occupying Europe; these men were known as "The Millionaires" because some had paid $10 per day for their passage through Central America to fight abroad[4]. As a result of this event dubbed "The Great March", which involved more than 100 businesses from across central Nebraska marching to Omaha for patriotic purposes,[5], South Dakota native Harry S Truman served as Commander-in-Chief of United States Forces Europe during World War II[6]. After World War II ended in 1945,[7] many veterans returned home while others continued to live or work in Omaha while their homes were renovated or replaced; among these individuals were Bob Hope whose parents lived on east side of town near Dupont Circle before they moved west to Des Moines early 20th century[8]; Art Linkletter who attended high school located just east of downtown until he graduated from college near Lincoln Center[9]; Neil Armstrong who attendedWest Side High School before moving onto university where he earned his Bachelors degree)[10];and Jerald Crouch who attended North High School south side up until being drafted into the Army serving in Vietnam
