The first post office was established in South Sioux City on December 15, 1867 by Wm Cooks with six residents living there at that time including G E Henson and his wife Mary Ann Henson In 1907, South Sioux City annexed part of neighboring Jefferson Township to become its own municipality On July 1, 1960, all of Pottawatomie County (northwest Iowa) were merged into Lincoln County so that this area would also be included within the new county government However some people continued to call themselves "Pottawatomies" and "SouthSiouxCityers" because their original hometown still exists today outside of town limits Today many businesses within town limits still use this name but outside of town boundaries almost everyone calls themselves "Lincoln Countians".
