In 1916, South Sioux City was selected to be the site of the new University of Nebraska–Lincoln which would serve both local residents and those living in surrounding towns and counties. The university's original buildings were constructed on what is now North Washington Avenue between 18th and 19th Streets NE. On July 1, 1920, Lincoln merged with Omaha to create one large city under one mayoralty. As a result of this merger, South Sioux City lost its independent status but retained all its municipal powers including zoning laws and taxation ordinances unique to that city limits until they were repealed by incorporation ordinance circa 1975 Today South Sioux City still boasts some impressive architecture dating back to 1916 including: Old First National Bank Building (1916), Methodist Church (1896-1901), Post Office (1886-1900), Gilded Age Hotel (1920), Masonic Temple (1910-1975), American Legion Hall (1920) & more
South Sioux City, Nebraska was founded in 1881 by a group of Mormon settlers who had come to the area from Iowa. The town rapidly grew and soon became a center for industry and trade. In 1907, South Sioux City was renamed Omaha after the city's mayor, William B. O'Neill. In 1916, the United States Congress passed the National Defense Act which created the Federal Aviation Authority and allowed for the first air traffic control tower in Omaha. The town also experienced some growth in terms of population during World War II as soldiers were stationed in nearby Lincoln.
