It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs, NE Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1867 when prospectors discovered gold near today's Scottsbluff. The first school was built in 1870 and the first post office opened in 1872. In 1907, the town became an incorporated municipality and its name changed to Scottsbluff Township. The original downtown area now occupies only a portion of what once constituted the center of town. Other attractions include two golf courses - one with 9 holes and one with 18 holes - two tennis courts - two boat ramps - a library/museum complex including several historical artifacts from past Scottsbliff residents, as well as multiple shopping centers within easy walking distance of most homes. The area around Scottsbluff has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 10,000 years according to archeological evidence found onsite. One account tells of Sioux Indians raiding party finding caches of goods along Missouri River while hunting white settlers across this same land some time before 17 Custer’s battle against them at Little Bighorn; that event forever changed these people’s relationship with whites both physically and symbolically throughout history (Fowler 1995). After Indian Removal began in 1830 all but 1/3rd of present day Nebraska were taken possession by various US tribes (Lopez 2003). Most notably the Otoe Nation ceded much territory eastward from where Pawnee villages once stood including present day Scottsbluff on July 12th 1863 following a bloody three year campaign led by General George Armstrong Custer after his troop’s defeat at Battle Creek Lockup northwest of here on May 6th 1862 (Galloway 1902). By 1865 almost all native peoples living eastward had been moved west into reservations or into Canada or Mexico so it can be said that without any large massacres or battles taking place approximately 350 new European settler families arrived in central Nebraska beginning around this time also making their presence known throughroads such as Kearney Road which ran through what is now downtown ScottsBlUFF circa 1860-1880 giving rise to erroneous speculation that Earhart Road named for Amelia Earhart directly connected modern day ScottsBlUFF to those days long ago...thus providing current commercial interests with yet another marketing opportunity! As noted earlier many local pioneers who came early on were buried within city limits today still visible just off main street “Avenue A” several blocks south from currentday I-90 exit 231st Street Northeast corner opposite former High School building across Main Street Entrance Gate All graves unmarked except 2 commemorative tablets placed there recently by descendantsof pioneer families who family tradition says visited weekly during prohibition era...one tablet reads "In Memory Of" James Mclntyre who died Dec 15 1889 aged 53 yrs old & wife Jessie born Jul 1861; other tablet reads "In Memory OF" John Laughlin age 37 d Jan 1915 son Of James Laughlin Sr Also Killed In Action At Washakie December 15 1914 During World War I" all 3 tablets remain today
