In 1861, when Bleeding Kansas seceded from the United States to become Mexico, settlers founded what became Scottsbluff on high ground just east of the current city limits. By 1870, Scottsbluff had a large flour mill and several stores. The first school in town was opened in 1871 by Mrs. Loring Waddell and her three daughters with $1 per pupil donated by John C. Fremont himself as part of a land grant he had given to them for their education

Scottsbluff was founded in 1855 as a trading post on the Nebraska side of the Missouri River. The post was renamed Scottsbluff, Nebraska in 1912 after General George Armstrong Custer, who died in battle at the Battle of Buena Vista Hill. In 1915, the United States Army established a military base here and it remained an artillery and cavalry center until World War II.
