Scottsbluff, Nebraska is a town in Dodge County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 3,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha–Council Bluffs metropolitan area. The first post office in Scottsbluff was established on November 2, 1883. The present post office building was built in 1903 and dedicated by President Grover Cleveland. The community received its name from General James Renfrew Scott who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became an American politician. He named his ranch "Scottsbluff" after the Scottish town of Blairgowrie near which he had served as a Brigadier General during the war. Brigadier General Scott also donated land to ScottsblUFF for development as a town and it became one of America's earliest towns when it was platted on January 24, 1865 by order of Governor Doniphan under consideration for escorts for Union troops coming into Nebraska from Iowa. The railroad arrived here on October 6, 1868 with its first trainloads of passengers and goods arriving at what is now called Depot Square (now Main Street). In 1870 Scottsbluff had 1 store and 5 homes; by 1880 it had 4 stores and 10 homes; by 1890 it had 10 stores and 30 homes; by 1900 it had 36 stores and 150 homes; today the population has topped 500 with over 140 housing units downtown including many luxury condos/townhomes! In addition to shopping there are many schools within walking distance including: McCook Community College (a regional four-year college), Kirkland Community College (a two-year college), Lincoln High School (grades nine through twelve), Mercyhurst Presbyterian Church (grades K-8)and more! Scottsbluff, Nebraska is a small town located in the south-central part of Nebraska. The population was 4,817 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Scott County. The town was founded by Daniel Boone on November 15, 1836 as Scottsville. The name originates from Scots whiskey which was popular back then and still is today. Scottsville became a post office on February 14, 1837, and a town on May 1, 1868. Scottsville has had three mayors: Leroy Bogan from 1916 to 1919; Hyrum Smith from 1951 to 1957; and Mervyn Dickey from 1987 to 1991. One of the first things that the town did when it got its start was to build a flour mill which became one of Scottsbluff's most famous landmarks. The mill closed in 1960 but has been renovated several times since then and now sells food products such as ice cream and bread made with local flour products.
Scottsbluff was founded in 1854 by J.W. McCormick and others as the town of Scottsville on the east side of the Missouri River. The first post office was established in 1861, and the town name was changed to Scottsbluff in 1868. In 1865, a gristmill was built, and in 1870 a sawmill and blacksmith shop were also erected. The first school was built in 1872, and the first store opened in 1880. A hotel was built around 1895, and an opera house and theater were both constructed around 1915-16. A chemical plant was built in 1951, but it closed down in 1959; however, it remains a part of Scottsbliff's history today as the town's only commercial building from that time period.
