Scottsbluff is a small town in Douglas County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area. The first people to live in Scottsbluff were two brothers, James and William Hays, who founded a store in 1871. William's son, George Hays, took over the store from his father in 1907. In 1916, Jethro Sargent built a school for the children of miners living near Scottsbluff. Sargent also developed an oil well nearby and exploitation began soon afterwards. In 1922, General Electric bought out Sargent's interest in the oil well and started production at its new site; this led to increased demand for gasoline and other products from local farmers which supported GE's operations until 1941 when WWII interrupted production. After World War II ended there was no significant growth until the late 1960s when deregulation of energy prices drove up prices for natural gas and other commodities resulting in a decline in manufacturing jobs throughout much of America while joblessness increased along with crime rates. In recent years there has been some growth including construction of new businesses such as an ethanol refinery and a fertilizer plant as well as annexation by neighboring Council Bluffs which has brought more life to the town since it became part of that city’s community services district on July 1st 2013

Scottsbluff was founded on December 12, 1867, by Captain John A. Scott and his men while they were exploring the Platte River area. They named their town after General Scott's favorite dog, which they found nearby. Scottsbluff became a prosperous trading post and cattle market center for the Nebraska Territory. In 1874, it was renamed Omaha because of its connections to that city in western Illinois. The post office continued to be called Scottsbluff until 1907 when it was changed to Omaha because of its larger population size. When the United States acquired Nebraska from Mexico in 1884, part of that state included Scottsbliffer County and parts of eastern Lincoln County. The county seat remained at Omaha until 1926 when it moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa. Despite this change in county seat, Scottssbluff remains one of the most important towns in Nebraska history both as a rural community and as a commercial center for central Nebraska. Its economy has been based largely on agriculture since early days and today its primary industry is ranching and farming; however, there are also significant businesses located in Scottsbluffer Plaza (now downtown Omaha) including an Intercontinental Exchange company branch, an insurance company subsidiary, a computer plant converted from an experimental power plant built by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., some retail stores and other associated businesses including several banks or financial institutions as well as numerous small businesses used by local farmers such as feed stores, grocery stores and dairy farms
