Gun targets have a long and colorful history in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. The first target was shot at the old Fort Kearney fortification on Saturday, October 12, 1857 by Captain John A. Sibley of the United States Army. The fort was destroyed in 1862 during the Omaha Wars and never rebuilt. The next target was built by J.P. Morgan in 1879 as part of his processing plant for cattle near Scottsbluff. It is still standing today just off Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard near the town square. In 1886, a large blacksmith shop was built on Cedar Street north of town to serve as a training ground for Union Civil War soldiers called "Camp McDowell." Camp McDowell was used until 1865 when it reverted to military use and became known as Fort Riley which is still standing today withinFort Riley Park in Scottsbluff

The first gun target in Scottsbluff was a long barreled shotgun. The town was founded in 1871, and the first targets were shotguns. In 1899, a rifle range was established in town and the first rifles were fired. In 1907, the first pistol range was established in town and pistols were fired. From 1911 to 1916, there were two wars fought in Nebraska, one of which caused damage to many buildings including the old courthouse where shooting ranges continued until 1922. In 1927, a rifle range opened up on Main Street and guns were fired for the first time ever from that location. This activity continued until 1932 when it closed due to being out of ammunition. A new rifle range opened up in 1935 on Union Avenue called “The Arsenal” which lasted until 1945 when it also closed due to lack of funds.
Scottsbluff, Nebraska is a small town in Scotts County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Scotts County. founded in 1868 by George A. Scott and his wife Sarah Ann (née French) as "Scott's Bluff" after purchasing 640 acres (248 hectares) of land from John A. Richardson for $4 per acre – one of the first purchases of land in Nebraska. In 1870, George A. Scott sold 1,000 acres to James Wickersham for $2 per acre with the understanding that Wickersham would deed it back to him once he had developed it into a town proper. In 1886, Jno Haggerty purchased 3 miles (5 km) of streets and 4 blocks (10 km²) of buildings from George A Scott for $500 cash and agreed to develop them into a city called Scottsbluff City Limits on July 15th of that year - becoming one of the first towns in Nebraska to be formed through annexation by another municipality! On October 12th 1892, when all but 2 blocks (53 m²) of what would become downtown Scottsbluff were added to the city limits by annexation - making it its present size - voters approved an ordinance creating The University of Nebraska at Omaha as a public university! This event marks not only the beginning but also the end of Downtown Scottsbliff's history as a village center; instead it became known as "The City".

Scottsbluff is a town in Douglas County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kearney, NE Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Scottsbluff settlers were Orville and Wilbur J. Scott who arrived in 1854. The Scott family name came from the Scottish village of Blairgowrie which was located about to the east of present-day Scottsbluff. They began raising corn and cattle on their farmstead which they named "Scott's Grove." In 1868, Alexander McGillivray purchased land in what is now Scottsbluff from the Scott family for $1,000. McGillivray built a log cabin near where he now stands and called it "McGillivray's Bluffs." By 1870, Scotsman James Hargrave had also moved to Scottsbluff and erected a log cabin on South Main Street. He became known as "Hargrave's Hill" because of his ownership of that portion of the townsite. In 1872, John Aiken purchased land north of Hargrave's Hill from Hargrave for $10 per acre (0% cash). Aiken erected a large barn on his property which served as a schoolhouse until 1898 when it was replaced by the current building on East Main Street. That same year saw the arrival of another Scotsman to this area - Andrew Mackintosh - with his wagonloads of potatoes that he sold at auction in Lincoln City to finance his entrance into politics as an Independent candidate for Ulysses S. Grant’s Republican Party nomination for President in 1876! Mackintosh would later become oneofthe most important businessmen and landowners in Omaha during its early years! In 1880, Norwegian immigrant Ole Olsen started operations at his farmstead about northeast of today's ScottsblUFF with help from some local boys he had recruited to help him with irrigation work on his Rancho de la Mesa country estate near Fremont Nebraska Territory then being leased by Major General George Armstrong Custer! Olsen continued operating outposts here until 1906 when he sold all but one outpost to Harry Knoppers Sr., son-in-law of Colonel Harry Knoppers Jr.. Today just south of downtown ScottsblUFF sits Ole Olsen’s old homestead site where he spent many happy seasons harvesting sweet corn while overlooking today’s busy I-80 corridor connecting Kearney, NE and Omaha City! On July 3rd 1890 US Postmaster General James Giddings arrived at scotts bluffs post office after spending several days travelling through southern Nebraska looking for new postal service locations due to expanding US mail services into newly acquired Nebraska Territory!! Giddings selected scotTS BLUFF as one potential location for a new post office!!! This event marks not only America’s first rural mail delivery service but also its official naming recognition by Congress!! Giddings quickly ordered construction start on what would become known as “Giddings” Post Office Tower – still standing (and well preserved) today & within walking distance nowadayof downtown scotTS BLUFF!!! From that day forward “Post Office Square” would be house number 1 inside & outside our modern skyline !! In 1896/97 – after only 2 ½ years operation – Giddings discontinued operations & dismantled all remaining equipment including all brick mailing boxes used up thru 1893 ??? Why??? No explanation offered ??? We do know however that those remain buried somewhere alongside MSM once again producing no resulting archaeological evidence….. What could have happened here?????????

In 1881, Scottsbluff became the first city in Nebraska. It rapidly grew into a major center for commerce and agriculture, and by 1910 had become one of the most important cities in the Midwest.
