Scottsbluff is a small town in Nebraska, located on the Missouri River. The population was 1,645 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Scottsbluff, NE Micropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Scottsbluff" derives from Nimrod Scotts, who settled here in 1854. The first permanent settler in what is now Scottsbluff was James Hickey in 1854. Hickey and his family moved from Ohio to this area after being expelled from their landowning families for religious reasons. They founded a log cabin known as Hickey's Ford on the current site of the town in 1855-56. In 1861, John Jacob Astor donated land to build a viaduct over the river which connected Omaha and Wichita (now Scottrade Center). This project became known as the "Astor Bridge". In 1865, Arent Crouse built a gristmill on Clear Creek about six miles northeast of town on donated land adjoining his farmstead called Buffalo Gap Ranch. By 1870, cattle had become an important part of Scottsbluff's economy due to good pastures and riverside shipping opportunities near by. A number of mills were built along Clear Creek during this time including those by Daniel Gadsden (1872), Elijah McCoy (1876-79), Wm Fenton (1881-84) and George Stephenson II (1887-92). In 1886, Jno Purdy opened one of the largest flour mills in Nebraska when he erected a three story mill building at 330 Main Street which still stands today as part of extant buildings in downtown Scottsbluff. During World War I, many local citizens volunteered their services including many men who worked aboard military ships moored at Omaha Harbor while other parts of America were Battleship Row manned by Naval personnel ashore; these volunteers received special honors such as medals and posthumous gravesites vaults above Scotts Bluffs City Hall Cemetery where remains are still interred today despite repeated vandalism attempts by vandals over recent years! After World War I ended there was significant growth in Scotts Bluffs with well over 1,000 people living here within 10 years following its establishment!
