The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Kearney County were Dutch farmers who scratched out a fur trade route across the Great Plains from Fort Berthold through present-day Omaha to Independence in Iowa c 1795-97 (the first permanent European settlement). They left behind 3 children: John Jacob Astor III (1799-1864), his wife Lydia Maria Child (1801-1876) and their son Nicholas Astor IV (1807-1892). Moses Aspinwall () built his first cabin near modern day Scottsbluff about 1824 on land grant claimed by Pierre Dorion (). The first school was started here around 1830 by Mr. Doherty (). In 1855 Joshua Norton (), one of three men chosen to survey Nebraska for the US government as part of efforts to improve transportation along the Missouri River network, arrived with his family from Hartford Connecticut on horseback and found good land for farming just east of present day Scottsbluff. His brother Jabez Norton () also began developing some land northeast of town into what would become North Dakota's Cannonball Valley area today's Hastings Ranching Country area. Development followed as people came to settle near the Missouri River then northward along its banks until groupings formed that led to towns being founded along important routes including those at Omaha and Council Bluffs – all three settlements becoming officially separate cities under various names by 1889 when these areas were combined into Kearney County.: Scottstown (later Colfax), Fremont City (later Neosho), Aberdeen City (later Dodge City), Storm Lake City ( later Lawrenceburg), Larned City ( later Rapidan)
