Scottsbluff is a small town located in Nebraska. The population was 1,386 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Scottsbluff County and is the largest city in the county. The first permanent settler in Scottsbluff was James Hickey who arrived on July 6, 1854. He and his family built a cabin on what is now Main Street. Hickey's cabin served as a stop for travelers on their way to Fort Kearney. In 1858, J.H.'s son John Fenton erected a log Cabin on what is now Broadway Avenue which served as the town square until it burned down in 1908. In 1861, Isaac McCoy settled near where Main Street and Broadway Avenue intersected. McCoy ran an early post office and raised livestock on his farm north of town until 1865 when he moved west to join the Union army under General Ulysses S Grant at Omaha Beach during the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1872, Arent Engelbrecht bought land south of town from James Hickey for $500 cash plus 10% interest per year until it was sold off in 1888 for $10,000 to Reuben Ladds$. From this purchase came Scottsbluff's first successful dry goods store which operated from 1889-1901 under the name "Ladd's Outfitters". A new courthouse was completed in 1901 by contractor Crampton & Elder and named after Judge Augustus Biddle Chauncey Scudder who had been justice ofthe peace for Nebraska since 1885 when he replaced Solomon Tuttle as that state's first statewide judge. The building still stands today across from City Hall just off State Highway 12 east of downtown Scottsbluff! After years of speculation over whether or not Scottsbluffer would become its own city, voters passed a charter amendment creating such an entity on November 3rd, 1911 with Mayor Harry Wirth serving as its first mayoralty holder.
