On January 1, 1868, it became a part of Scottsbluff Township. On May 26, 1887, it became a city and was renamed Scottsbluffer City. It lost its city status on December 29, 1988. After being unofficially annexed by Omaha on December 10th that year as an annexe to the city limits of Omaha – following an ordinance passed by the Omaha City Council – Scottsbluffer City reverted back to its original name on January 2nd 1989 when Nebraska's statehood law applied retroactively to local ordinances dating back before 1910
Scottsbluff was founded in 1854 by John D. Rockefeller, who helped found the Standard Oil Company. The town became a coal and oilmining center during the late 19th century and early 20th century, and was host to the world's first airtight oil storage tank in 1907. In 1933, Scottsbluff became the capital of Nebraska after Lincoln was moved from its original location to become the state's capital.
