The first European to sight the area now known as Papillion was Captain James Cook on his ill-fated search for Terra Australis in 1770. He named it after François de la Salle, captain of the "Nieuport" and an early explorer of southcentral North America. In 1868, US president Abraham Lincoln awarded land to David Fenton in what is now the town of Papillon (Spanish: "Papillon"). A post office called Papilion was established there in 1872.
In 1890, a railroad line was built through the area and a station called Omaha served both towns until 1916 when that line was abandoned.
