Papillion is a town in Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kearney-Naperville-Pope City, NE Metropolitan Statistical Area. Papillion was named for General James A. Papineau, who died in 1868 while serving as colonel of volunteers in Kansas during the Dakota Wars against Sioux and Cheyenne Native Americans. The community was founded by Captain John Gentry in 1879 on land purchased from the Sioux Nation. Gentry's wife, Sarah Stephenson Gentry, also helped to plat the town and initial construction occurred soon after she arrived with her family from England in 1881. The first post office opened in 1886 and remained open until 1923; it was then renamed Papillion after Governor George Wickersham Papineau (1846-1926). The community grew rapidly due to its proximity to Omaha and its availability of transportation including a railroad which served as the main artery into and out of Omaha until it was destroyed by a fire on November 15, 1904. After recommissioning Amtrak service following that tragedy, Omaha resumed dominance over Papillion as its primary commercial center; however, papilionite development continued throughout World War II with papilionite housing being built along both I-80 west of town and I-71 east of town. During World War II much effort went into developing local economy through manufacturing such as munitions production; however little attention was given to agriculture or ranching which had been dominant up until that point; this changed during the postwar years when many farmers switched to corn ethanol production due to lower fuel prices resultant from increased oil demand worldwide. This change also led to new subdivisions such as Keystone Ranch Estates located east of town off I-71 near Interstate 80W followed by River Hills Addition west of town on I-80E across from Keystone Ranch Estates which became known as "The Hill". Many businesses were established within these areas including Bedrock Coal Company which operated an open mine next door to Keystone Ranch Estates for more than fifty years before it closed in 2000; this event helped contribute significantly to downtown Papillion's decline since most industry moved away from downtown over time anyway.; nevertheless many people continue living there today despite its declining economic fortunes.:
